    Editorial Review

Amazon.comConceived by the French director Adrian Maben as "an anti-Woodstockfilm," Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii was shot in October 1971 in avacant, 2,000-year-old amphitheater--a venue chosen to accentuate thegrandeur and spaciousness of the band's Meddle-eramusic. This disc contains a new, 90-minute director's cut as well as theoriginal 60-minute concert film, whose production and effects feelinescapably dated. Maben's cut goes to great lengths to lend the film amore contemporary feel, but it's the earlier version that makes thisdisc such a gem, being more focused on the music and more wholistic invision. The anamorphic, 16:9 director's cut interweaves the Pompeiiperformances with fascinating but distracting interviews and musicsnippets filmed later (mostly during the recording of Dark Side ofthe Moon). The movie was originally prepared in a 4:3aspect ratio, however, and the widescreen version crops perfectly framedimages like the nine-square mosaic of drummer Nick Mason in "One ofThese Days." The original offers plenty of closeups of fingers on fretsand keys, with shots that are often luxuriously long in duration. Andthe picture quality from Pompeii is revelatory: outstandingly sharp andclear, rich in subtle grades of light and color.

Generous extras include everything from original posters, reviews, bootleg album covers, and song lyrics to a 24-minute interview withMaben. But for all the director's talk of the glorious acoustics inPompeii's amphitheater, there's little natural ambience to be heard. TheDolby Digital 2.0 sound is clear, dry, and two-dimensional, though notablybetter than any previous video release. --Michael Mikesell1 ... Read more

DescriptionPink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" Classic Album is the creative story behind the masterpiece: "Dark Side Of The Moon". "Dark Side Of The Moon" transformed Pink Floyd from art house favorites to global, stadium superstars. Prior to 1973, Pink Floyd maintained a relentless gigging schedule and by the time they came to record "Dark Side Of The Moon" had already created many of the basic tracks. "Dark Side Of The Moon" would be the first Pink Floyd (post Syd Barrett) album where Roger Waters would supply all the lyrics around a concept: The Circle of Life. With the timeless qualities of its production and musicality, allied to the hypnotic evocation of its central themes - alienation, paranoia, madness, war and death, "Dark Side Of The Moon" would become the album that would dominate the 70's and 80's (with a record number of 741 consecutive weeks in the Billboard 200). This program takes an in depth look at the making of the 1973 album. All four members of the band Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright are featured in exclusive interviews. Roger, David and Richard play songs and demonstrate themes from the album. Alan Parsons (the original engineer) takes you through the multi track tapes giving a unique insight into the musical fabric of the record and the program is illustrated throughout with archive footage. "Dark Side Of The Moon" with its combination of great songs, inventive effects and one of the best known sleeves ever, tapped into the world's collective subconscious and became a landmark in Rock history and a truly Classic Album. Editorial Review

Amazon.comBy any rational measure, Alan Parker's cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd: The Wallis a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant, and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters's great musical opus, and yet utterly devoid of the humor that Waters certainly found in his own material. Any attempt to visualize The Wall would be fraught with artistic danger, and Parker succumbs to his own self-importance, creating a film that's as fascinating as it is flawed.

The film is, for better and worse, the fruit of three artists in conflict--Parker indulging himself, and Waters in league with designer Gerald Scarfe, whose brilliant animated sequences suggest that he should have directed and animated this film in its entirety. Fortunately, this clash of talent and ego does not prevent The Wall from being a mesmerizing film. Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof (in his screen debut) is a fine choice to play Waters's alter ego--an alienated, "comfortably numb" rock star whose psychosis manifests itself as an emotional (and symbolically physical) wall between himself and the cold, cruel world. Weaving Waters's autobiographical details into his own jumbled vision, Parker ultimately fails to combine a narrative thread with experimental structure. It's a rich, bizarre, and often astonishing film that will continue to draw a following, but the real source of genius remains the music of Roger Waters. --Jeff Shannon1 ... Read more

With the release of 1973's The Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd abruptly went from a moderately successful acid-rock band to one of pop music's biggest acts. The recording, in fact, remained on Billboard's Top 200 album chart longer than any other release in history. Along with 1979's The Wall, it established Pink Floyd as purveyors of a distinctively dark vision.Experimenting with concept albums and studio technology and breaking free of conventional pop-song formats, Pink Floyd prefigured the progressive rock of the '70s and ambient music of the '80s. ... DescriptionThe sudden departure of Pink Floyd's founding member Syd Barrett in 1968 marked the closure of the first prolific chapter in the Pink Floyd story.A maverick artist and true individual, Syd Barrett helped forge the British psychedelic scene when he formed Pink Floyd with Roger Waters, Rick Wright and Nick Mason in 1965.This special charts the band's rise to fame under the guidance of Barrett's influence to his premature departure under a cloud of drug abuse and psychological problems. Richly illustrated with rare early footage of the band performing, alongside new interviews with the members of the band - David Gilmour, Rick Wright, Roger Waters and Nick Mason - and their associates, fans and friends including Jerry Shirley (Humble Pie), Graham Coxon (Blur) and original band member Bob Klose. DescriptionConceived by Roger Waters as an ambitious double album, a spectacular live show and a ground breaking feature film, The Wall has gone on to achieve iconic status in the history of popular music. Using the actual words of the band and the critics then and now, this is the independent critical review of a milestone in popular culture, which strips away the prejudices to produce the ultimate retrospective on one of the most important popular works of the twentieth century. The book is a detailed analysis of the creation of the work drawing extensively on the views of the members of Pink Floyd themselves and featuring a 1979 track-by-track review of the album by Roger Waters. ...
