DescriptionThelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser. Filmmaker Bruce Ricker couldn't believe his luck. Michael and Christian Blackwood's extensive 1968 footage of the groundbreaking modern jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk, including the only footage of the very private Monk off stage, was in excellent condition. The reels were, in Ricker's words, "just sitting there like the Dead Sea Scrolls of jazz." Ricker, as co-producer, joins director and fellow producer Charlotte Zwerin (Gimme Shelter), executive producer Clint Eastwood and others to bring these scrolls to astonishing life. Their Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser combines the Blackwood's rare footage of Monk in studio on tour and behind the scenes with new interviews, archival photos and more to create a landmark aural and visual treat.Tunes in order of appearance: Evidence; Rhythm-a-ning; On the Bean; Round Midnight; Well, You Needn't; Bright Mississippi; Blue Monk; Trinkle, Tinkle; Rhythm-a-ning; Ugly Beauty; Ask Me Now; Just a Gigolo; Crepuscule with Nellie; I Should Care; We See; Osaka T.; Evidence; Epistrophy, Don't Blame Me; Ruby, My Dear; I Mean You; Lulu's Back in Town; Off Minor; Pannonica; Boo Boo's Birthday; Misterioso; Monk's Mood; Sweetheart of All My Dreams; Round Midnight. Editorial Review

Innovative, influential and strongly revered, John Coltrane was the most revolutionary and widely imitated saxophonist in jazz. With previously unseen footage, The World According
to John Coltrane celebrates this extraordinary and passionate musician who strove with 'relentless curiosity' for a musical ideal and cultivated an almost saintly reputation among listeners and fellow musicians. The film
includes extensive performance footage and culminates in a fascinating musical meeting between the Art Ensemble of Chicago saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell and dervish musicians
in Morocco's Sahara desert in 1990.

DescriptionElvin Jones is the archetypical modern jazz musician -instinct not intellect. This is the kind of music he has played to perfection since his days with John Coltrane. There are some heavy-duty side-men in his present "Jazz Machine", Sonny Fortune and Ravi John Coltrane, the son of the most influential tenor sax player ever.FEATURING:Sonny Fortune (saxophone, flute), Ravi John Coltrane (saxophone), Willie Pickins (piano),Chip Jackson (bass), Elvin Jones (drums)."Elvin Jones' ferocity and originality and subtlety on his instrument changed the nature of jazz drumming."-Whitney Balliett in American Musicians "Elvin was ready from the first time I heard him, you know, I could hear the genius there."-John Coltrane "The music (Elvin) played with Mr. Coltrane's band often burst with a tumultuous energy that, at the time, defied a whole set of jazz and social conventions.Nearly 30 years later Mr. Jones hasn't retreated: his music, loud and brash, keeps a transgressional quality to it."-Peter Watrous in the New York Times ... Editorial Review

Amazon.comIt might not seem like much: 30 minutes, three tunes, four musicians ona bare-bones soundstage. But this is John Coltrane, and any opportunity to see the legendary saxophonist at work is something to be savored. That's especially true with this January 1964 television performance. Some five years after his membership in Miles Davis's immortal Kind of Blue group, he was well past playing the usual standards and ballads; at the same time, he had yet to explore the outer reaches of the avant-garde. Joined here by pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones--the classic Coltrane quartet, and undoubtedly one of the most important and influential groups in jazz history--he works his way through three numbers that were familiar components of the Coltrane repertoire: Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue," which finds Trane on soprano sax and features a typically dynamic Tyner solo; "Alabama," a Coltrane original with a brooding, droning intro and conclusion sandwiched around the middle section's slow, swinging groove; and "Impressions," the modal touchstone, which at nearly 14 minutes long gives all four musicians plenty of room to stretch out.

Playing the tenor horn here, Coltrane is typically restless and searching, volcanic and commanding. It's not necessarily pretty, especially when he is backed only by Jones's angry, explosive polyrhythms, but the power is undeniable. The fact that Coltrane says nothing (all other Jazz Casual guests were interviewed by host Ralph J. Gleason) is immaterial; what could he say with his voice that he hadn't already said with his horn? --Sam Graham1 ... Read more

Legendary Jazz drummer Elvin Jones heads this live, full-length concert DVD entitled, Elvin Jones: Jazz Machine. Assembling an all-star band that includes Sonny Fortune and Ravi Coltrane, among others, Elvin plays with the thunderous power that reverberated throughout the Jazz community and influenced generations of musicians, such as Ginger Baker of Cream and Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He comes out smokin and goes from there. On this special DVD, Jazz veterans Willie Pickens and Chip Jackson brilliantly orchestrate the power of Jones drums, while young confrere saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and veteran Sonny Fortune showcase their skills while helping accentuate their mentor s bold, free flowing style that helped move his boisterous instrument from the back of the club to the forefront of Music! ...
